Just rinse them out until the water runs clear. The sponge will remain discolored but it won't come off on your paper. Just put on new inks and they'll work fine.

And if using the metallic colors, do make sure to clean your sponges as soon as you're finished with them!!! I allowed some to dry on my sponges and it hardens the sponge!!! The regular inks won't do this, just the metallics.*wink* Actually, I seldom clean my sponges of regular inks...that way I can always go back and spritz 'em a bit and still get some quick pastel color, or just reink them with the same colors the next time I want to sponge.*G*

If you do a search for cleaning or rainbow sponges there should be a lot of discussion on this topic. I know several years ago we had a lot of discussion about cleaning them. There will be some good reading.

The answer is yes, as stated and they will stain. Two main things; if using metallic inks wash immediately after using so the ink doesn't dry the sponge. Secondly, NEVER use detergents or soap to clean them. You'll NEVER get it out of the sponge! (Just use water. )

Don't forget to try the "Dirty Stamping" technique invented by Dee and Tim Holtz!
